The
Accademia Militare di Modena, housed in the seventeenth century
Palazzo Ducale, has the important function of training officers
for the Italian Army.
Last in the line of a long tradition of schools and academies
dating back to the eighteenth century, the Accademia Militare
took on its present name and statute in 1947 after the end of
the Second World War.
This prestigious school offers future officers (from the 182°
course of the academic year 2000-2001 female
students can be admitted) a course of instruction of great extent;
while covering the traditional disciplines of military strategy
combined with thorough physical training, it also prepares the
students to run the military apparatus through the teaching of
legal, administrative and scientific subjects, with special emphasis
on advanced technology and foreign languages.
The traditional education in the art of war has been reduced in
recent years to make room for the creation of a more modern military
culture, aimed at defending the peace and forming executive cadres
increasingly oriented towards global social progress. The Accademia
Militare has, however, retained the most fascinating of its traditional
rituals. Every year its gates open to celebrate along with the
inhabitants of the city such traditional occasions as the swearing
in of the cadet officers, the Mac p 100, during which the passing
of the "stecca" takes place, and the debutantes' ball.
