Modena
has much to offer for lovers of theatre, music and cinema. The
city's principal theatre is the Teatro Comunale, designed by the
architect Francesco Vandelli and opened in 1841. It has a seating
capacity of 1200 and a show-bill running each year from October
through to August. The programme covers a wide range of entertainments,
including opera, ballet and concerts.
In recent years the drama programme is reserved almost exclusively
for the Teatro Storchi. This splendid nineteenth century theatre,
also situated in the city centre and recently restored, has been
quick to establish a reputation among theatre-goers as one of
the best-organised and most comfortable Italian drama theatres.
Besides the
two main theatres, the Teatro delle Passioni and the Teatro Michelangelo
also offer drama seasons of great interest, each in a specific
field. The Teatro delle Passioni stages production of sperimental
theatre, whilst the Teatro Michelangelo concentrates on light
comedy. Other theatre seasons are offered by the theatre of Carpi
and Sassuolo.
For film lovers, Modena can offer almost a dozen commercial cinemas
showing the finest productions of the season and five of them
are multiscreen cinema.
