The
Modenese motor industry is well-known all over the world, thanks
to the presence on its territory of very important manufacturers
such as: Ferrari, Maserati, De Tomaso, Qvale, Pagani, Edonis and
Lamborghini, whose factories are located in the province
of Bologna, but very close to Modenese territory.
The development of this productive system, is the result of skills
in mechanical production which have been integrated into the social
and economic sector, thanks to the system of professional schools,
the experience and advice collected over the years in big pre-war
plants.
In Emilia there are many technical and professional schools that
offer important mechanical courses. In the province of Modena
the institute "Regia Scuola Popolare per Arti e Mestieri
Fermo Corni" that has been active in Modena since 1921, is
a good example.
Among the most important mechanical factories, there is first
of all Ferrari S.p.A.. It was created by Enzo Ferrari in 1929
after a few years of experience in Alfa Romeo. The company has
developed with the aim of manufacturing machine tools, especially
oil-pressure grinding machines.
At the end of the Second World War, more exactly in 1947, the
manufacturing of sport cars began attracting attention from all
over the world, thanks to its great results in the most prestigious
races of the time. Currently Ferrari has about 2,000 employees
that have to produce 4,000 units.
Even Maserati SpA is of great importance. The company was set
up in 1914 in Bologna and bought in 1937 by an important Modense
family: Orsi. In 1939 for the first time the first plant specialised
in the production of racing and touring cars was created.
Mainly the sports car industry is made up of about 3,000 operators
earning about 775 million Euros. 68% of its earning is made on
international markets, especially in Germany, the United States,
Great Britain, and Japan.
Besides sports car producers, the automotive sector plays a fundamental
role in Modenese industry, due to the presence of several factories
specilised in the production of component parts for cars, buses
and motorvehicles such as: mufflers, suspension units, bodywork,
and electrical components.
It is a grouping together of small industries that assumes influential
dimensions also as far as its economic activities are concerned.
Within the automotive sector there is in fact a significant presence
of small businesses, often owned and run by ex-workers from larger
companies who, making the most of their working experience market
themselves as autonomous and highly specialised workshops, capable
of actively participating in the finalisation of a product.
It is largely due to this small-business evolution and the interdependent
relationships between them, that the Modenese automotive industry
is so successful. Its all about a competitive advantage,
which is born from a synergy of social relationships and a widespread
culture of production, as well as a quality which is consolidated
directly between the producers and clients and suppliers.
It is a competitive advantage that has also given rise to important
foreign investments in the area, on the part of multi-nationals
who have decided to locate here, by buying existing businesses,
or creating new ones.
