The
general wealth and the highest per capita income in Italy, are
elements that have transformed the Modenese distribution system
from a marginal into a specialist sector, characterised by a modern
distribution network.
Over the years the organisational structure has been involved
in some far-reaching changes that have reduced the number of small
commercial activities, favouring larger retail outlets (shopping
centres and supermarkets). Besides these large distribution outlets,
medium and small-sized shops continue to be competitive. This
competition is based on their proximity to residential areas (so-called
cornershops), and on an increased specialisation in some market
sectors of higher value.
A feature of the Modenese system of distribution is the massive
presence on the market of consumer and retail cooperatives (some
of them have national importance). Their sales strategy
is especially based on large retail outlets as far as consumer
cooperatives are concerned.
In the province there are some methods of distribution that still
reflect local tradition. For example, the Monday market in Modena
is more than a commercial activity. There are hundreds of stalls
of all kinds, that are not only retail outlets, but also points
of social contact. Last but not least is the trade in antiqueware
which is held in Modena on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of every
month and is a meeting point for lovers of old artistic objects
and curiosities alike.
