 The
Modenese province, like many other industrial areas of the centre
and north-east of Italy, is characterised by three main elements:
a high number of companies, a strong presence of medium and small
businesses and a high per-capita income.
These small businesses initially imposed their presence on the
market as suppliers of components or as an evolution on the craft
businesses already existing on the territory. Over the years,
the economic structure has
gradually transformed into specific forms and models, in which
the local companies have assured their role as organizations able
to operate independently in Italy as well as abroad.
The industrial success, marked by this productive system, is essentially
based on the organizational model of industrial districts.
In the province of Modena there are five industrial areas: Modena,
Vignola, Carpi, Sassuolo, Mirandola. Each of them
is specialised in different products. The sectors, in which the
Modenese industry can boast greater experience and specialization,
are: mechanics, racing cars, agricultural machines, bioengineering,
ceramics and food industry. In the following pages there are
sections regarding this sector.
The list doesn't fully represent the wide range of Modenese products.
A strong dynamic presence is represented by these sectors: publishing,
paper and cardboard industry, furniture, wood processing and packaging.
As regards the publishing industry the production of picture-cards
is very popular.
Today investment and new product and process research are the
main priorities of all businesses. A
growing number companies obtain a quality certificate for productive
processes or products.
On foreign markets the turnover counts for about 35% of the total,
reaching the record figure of 8,4 billions of Euros in 2004.
The internationalising processes of production have also provoked
in Modena a growth in the delocalisation of productive activities
to further markets, which seem to be more profitable as far as
costs are concerned. This technique is creating a selection of
sub-suppliers of the province allowing companies to sell their
products on international markets directly.
